Give me a tune and I'll sing you a song says Roop Jauhari -- the lyricist of Andrew Lloyd Webber's composition DillagiPerhaps Roop Jauhari's lyrics have a special quality to them because she not just mouths them, she sings them. But then the lyricist for Suchitra Krishnamoorthi's newest release is a singer first and a songwriter second. And writing music for other people is just Roop's way of having her say. "At a very early age, I knew that I was going to be a singer." And if it took time to convince others of that, she was willing to wait. So much so that when she went to HMV with four original compositions and the hope of cutting an album, and they asked her to wait, she agreed. When music company's asked her to pen the lyrics for the likes of Kamaal Khan and Jasmine Bharucha, she agreed. And when the trickle became a flood, she continued to write music for others. From `Ho Gayi Hai Mohabbat', to television, her word, literally, began to spread.
"With the senseless lyrics that rule theroost, mine stood out, simply because they made sense. And romance is so `me'. Songs like `Sunehre Pal' talk about moments that you see and cherish in your mind forever, like the moonlit sea, a clear river with a school of goldfish... so many things."
And if good lyrics never go stale, neither does a good voice. Roop is finally getting a chance to cut her own album which will be released in September. And while she is not willing to divulge the details, she is clear that her time has come. And that while the wait was worth it, now her lyrics will be accompanied by her vocals.
