CHANDIGARH, July 1: Yerma, a theatre classic by a Spanish playwright Fredrico Garcia Lorca, was staged by Yavnika Theatre Group at Tagore Theatre here this evening.Translated into Hindi by Sewak Nair, who has also produced the play, it is being staged to celebrate Lorca's birth centenary. While the opening night attracted a large and appreciative audience; the play will also be staged on Friday and Saturday.
Yerma, the Spanish word for "barren"; the play unfolds the tragic tale of a young woman who comes to be known by this name. She is married to a much older man who is unable to father a child. When she can no longer bear the frustration, she murders her husband. Against this backdrop of violence and vain longing for a child, the play explores the man-woman relationship, the status of women and the vulnerability of the family.
Indu Verma enacted the role of Yerma, Dibendu Bhattacharya played Jawan. Suveeran directed the play. All the actors are from the National School of Drama, New Delhi.
