Maharashtra men bag water polo gold

MUMBAI, JULY 1: Maharashtra men's water polo team won gold medal in the 26th Junior Aquatic Championships held at Jodhpur recently.

Maharashtra tied with Kerala on points in the Super League but topped due to better goal difference -- four compared to Kerala's three. The team -- coached by Adi Barucha -- took their seventh successive title. Bengal were third.

The men trailed 3-5 against Kerala at the end of the third quarter. Two goals from Amol Deo and captain Indrajeet Khadilkar enabled them to level scores and take the title on goal difference. Maharashtra had defeated Bengal 8-4.

The state girls, coached by Ajay Datar and captained by Abhaya Vartak, finished second to Kerala, losing their final Super League match 3-4 to them while Bengal finished with the bronze. Maharashtra had earlier beaten Bengal 6-1.

The men's event had nine teams while the women's had seven before three teams qualified for the Super League.

Results (Super League)

Boys' under-20: Maharashtra 8 (Indrajeet Khadilkar4, Harshad Barve 3, Tejas Pathare 1) bt Bengal 4 (Pradip Choudhary, Vivek Kumar Shaw, Prasanjit Bannerjee, Sandip Bose); Kerala 8 bt Bengal 5; Maharashtra 7 (Khadilkar 3, Amol Deo, Pathare, Sanket Shinde) drew with Kerala 7 (Vijay Kumar 3, S Vinod 2, Gopa Kumar 2).

Final placings: Maharashtra 3 points (goal difference 4), Kerala 3 (GD 3), Bengal 0.

Girls: Kerala 6 bt Bengal 3; Maharashtra 6 (Abhaya Vartak 2, Rujuta Deshpande 2, Bhairavi Merchant, Delna Bhumgura) bt Bengal 1 (Purnima Pal); Kerala 4 (Biji Verghese 2, E V Sheeba, S Sheeja) bt Maharashtra 3 (Deshpande 2, Merchant).

Final placings: Kerala 4, Maharashtra 2, Bengal 0.
