BANGALORE, JULY 2: The Central government is in the process of appointing four to five lawyers in each district to assist senior citizens with their litigations, Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Maneka Gandhi announced here on Thursday.The Supreme Court had already written to the states to take up the cases of the senior citizens on a priority basis, she said, adding that Kerala, Himachal Pradesh and Sikkim had already implemented the directives.
Maneka was speaking at a function organised by the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) here.
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between NLSIU director N L Mitra and Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Anand Bordia, to institute an endowment at the NLSIU in order to create a chair on juvenile justice at the function.
Maneka handed over a draft of Rs 30 lakh as a one time grant to the NLSIU director N L Mitra to create the endowments. She asked the NLSIU to submit a policy paper onJuvenile Act by August so that it would be presented in the Parliament.
