Army wrests ridgelines near Tiger Hill

GAURAV C SAWANT
DRASS, JULY 2: The Army continued its successful advance, completely securing the ridgelines east of Tiger Hills. Using ``direction finders,'' it tracked down Pakistan artillery locations.

The army has also recovered the crucial junction point where the gun battle was on since yesterday, completing the consolidation of Peak 5100. No infiltrators were found on the junction peak, having abandoned their position.

``Many of the intruders were seen running away towards the Line of Control (LoC). Some were shot down as others tried to evacuate the bodies. At least bodies of 40 Pakistani intruders are lying on the eastern ridge. The enemy morale here was completely down and seeing the advancing troops, they just abandoned their bunkers and fled,'' an officer at Drass said. The Air Force too kept up its strikes, undertaking ``search and destroy'' missions in the sector. Many bunkers were reported to have been destroyed and a number of casualties suffered by the enemy in the air strikes. The Indian troops alsoeffectively used shoulder-fired bunker-buster Milan missiles to destroy the intruders' bunkers. Meanwhile, all bodies of Indian soldiers in Drass have been recovered and 20 of them were sent home today. The Indians had suffered 25 casualties in the fiercest fight yet for the recovery Peak 4700. But having offered stiff resistance in the fight for Peaks 4700 and 5100, the infiltrators just gave in tamely at the eastern ridge.

``The intruders knew that we were coming with full strength and high morale. They did not stand a chance,'' said a soldier, still raring to go. But having suffered losses on the adjoining peaks, the infiltrators were reinforcing their position on the Tiger Hills. ``We cannot afford to underestimate the enemy. They are sending supplies and other reinforcements to Tiger Hills from their side of the LoC. But now that we have secured the nearby peaks, it is not going to be easy for them,'' said another officer. In the meantime, the infiltrators, were trying to launch a fresh assault on theTololing Heights. ``Some intercepts of the infiltrators' communication reveal that they are planning to launch an attack on Tololing Heights. Its loss was a big humiliation for them. But we are prepared to deal with it,'' the officer added. The consolidation of the other gains was also on.
