Wai bandh evokes good response
Satara: The Wai bandh, called to protest against the move to shift the office of the Marathi Enclopaedia from Wai to Pune, received a good response on Thursday. The traders in the town had also closed all trade activities to as a part of the State-wide strike to protest against hike in sales tax.Many posters, condemning Prof M P Rege, the chairman of the Marathi Encyclopedia Board, and the State Government for the move to shift the office were put up in the town at several places. However, the scheduled morcha and the plan to burn effigy of Prof Rege was cancelled following a clarification by the Encyclopedia Board which stated that so far no decision was taken to shift the board office from Wai.
Accused MLA appears in court
Solapur: Ravi Patil, MLA from Indi in Karnataka, who was wanted in connection with an alleged rape case appeared in the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate S R Bhandurge on Thursday. Earlier, his applications for anticipatory bail was rejected by the district sessions court and later by the Bombay High Court.
After his appearance in the court, police inspector Shrikant Kalghatagi urged the court to hand over the accused to the police for investigation into the case. The request was conceded. Meanwhile, the police are in search of the other four accomplices of the MLA.
NCP group in Satara ZP
Satara: A signature campaign has been launched to form a separate group of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in Satara Zilla Parishad (ZP). A letter in this connection will be given to district collector Anil Diggikar within a couple of days, Kishore Galinde, chairman of the social welfare committee, has said.
Satara Zilla Parishad has 42 Congress members, 17 independents and six Shiv Sena members. Of the 42 Congress members, 20 members have supported Sharad Pawar's Nationalist Congress Party, Galinde has claimed. The ZP is headed by Narayanrao Pawar, a staunch supporter of Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee President Prataprao Bhosale.
