Administration to give Rs 1 lakh award on arrest of blast culprits

CHANDIGARH, July 2: The Chandigarh Administration today announced an award of Rs 1 lakh for anyone providing information leading to the arrest of persons responsible for the Sector 34 bomb blast on Wednesday.

This decision was taken at a high-level meeting of officials of the Chandigarh Administration, chaired by the UT Administrator Lt Gen B.K.N. Chhibber (retd), here today, where it was also decided to announce another award of Rs 50,000 for anyone providing information leading to the arrest of any terrorist in the city, with or without weapons.

To solicit the information pertaining to the bomb blasts or terrorists, the Chandigarh Police has also created a special cell which would be operational 24 hours a day with all communication facilities.

While reviewing the law and order situation at the meeting, in view of the recent bomb blast in Sector 34, the Administrator asked Adviser Vineeta Rai to evolve an action plan to prevent recurrence of such incidents in the city.

The Adviser was also asked to coordinate with the Municipal Corporation for introduction of a regulated parking system for the city, so as to ensure proper record of vehicles being parked in a particular parking area. Public cooperation was also sought to ensure that no vehicle was left lying unattended on the roadside.

She was also asked to pursue the proposal with the Union Government for raising one Reserve Battalion of Chandigarh Police to be used for operational duties. The strength of Home Guards in the city was also sought to be increased. The services of private security agencies for special institutions and installations was also sought to be used.

Officials at the meeting also decided to set up checkposts on all roads leaving Chandigarh, which would turn active immediately after the occurrence of an incident in the city. This, they felt, would help in early interception of the culprits.

The Administrator also emphasised on the need for increasing the fleet of ambulances and the Inspector General of Police and Deputy Commissioner were asked to link up the communication system of ambulances with the Police Control Room so that the ambulances reached the site of incident along with the PCR van.

Stressing on the need to strengthen intelligence network in the city and its periphery, the Administrator called for public help for providing immediate information regarding any suspicious element.

Besides the Adviser, Home Secretary N.K. Jain, Finance Secretary Rakesh Singh, DC M. Ramsekhar, IGP S.K. Singh, SSP (City) C.S.R. Reddy also attended today's meeting.
