`Domesticated' deer die on being set free

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MEERUT, JULY 3: The mysterious death of three of the 30-odd black bucks released from the Railway Park at Hapur to the Hastinapur Wildlife Sanctuary here on the orders of the court has shocked wildlife lovers.

Within four days of their translocation, two pregnant black bucks had suffered serious and fatal wounds. Meanwhile, wild dogs were seen tearing at the body of the third deer, which was found on the road near the upper Ganga Canal.

It is suspected that the deer, domesticated over the years had become used to human contact and hence could not adjust to their new environment. With their survival instincts benumbed, the deer became vulnerable to attacks by stray dogs and poachers. However, department officials fear that fights among the black bucks may also have led to the fatal injuries.
