Kozhikode, July 3: Vijayalakshmi Subburaman of Indian Airlines has moved closer to her third title in the National Women A Chess Championship today with her 11th round victory over Bindu Saritha of LIC. Viji, with 8.5 points, has a commanding one point lead over her nearest rival Bhagyashreee Thipsay of IDBI with two rounds to go and needs only to draw the remaining games to romp home.Bhagyashree Thipsay too made sure that she would figure in the top four here and she would not be required to reproduce the same effort that saw her get into the Indian team with a cent per cent score in the last five rounds last year. She is sitting pretty with 7.5 points and only Swati, half a point behind her has a chance to finish ahead of her. Swati had rest today.Safira Shanaz of TN, Anupama Gokhale of PSCB (both on 6.5) and Koneru Humpy of AP would battle it out in the next two rounds for the fourth berth in the Indian team.
Humpy stopped No 2 seed Pallavi Shah's surge with a crushing win in English Opening. Pallaviwith black and in an even position after 20 moves, offered her knight in the rook file for which she must have expected high returns. The little Humpy, who has the composure of some of the experienced IWMs here, kept the piece and increased her gains through simplification. The Queen versus rook ending was lost for Pallavi, who had also lost some pawns on the way.
Viji looked set for an all-out attack on the Kingside in English Opening against Bindu, who defended stoutly in a difficult position. Viji erred marginally in a complicated position which allowed the game to drift into an ending in which Viji won an exchange for two pawns. After snatching the extra pawns, Viji promoted her Queen-rook pawn and won in 62 moves.Viji's sister, Meenakshi, was in her elements in the Queens Gambit Declined as she attained an overwhelming position against Safira Shanaz after offering a bishop sacrifice in early middle game. However, she faltered in the execution and captured a pawn with the wrong piece which allowedSafira to simplify and go into a rook and pawn ending. Now, it was Safira's turn to scorn some chances and finally the game was drawn after 42 moves.
Swati Mohota of West Bengal lost a piece on the 13th move in Caro-Kann Defence against Bhagyashree Thipsay for two pawns and never recovered. Launching a Kingside attack, Bhagyashree cantered home in 31 moves.Anupama won a piece in Kings Indian defence after Sheena of Kerala misplayed the opening and allowed her rival's Queen to make dangerous forays. The five-time champion earned the point after 50 moves. Aarthie won two pawns against Dolan Champa Bose in Sicilian Defence and grabbed another in a roon and bishop ending after 38 moves.
