IHF Sr rout Hyderabad, Services hold Juniors

UNITED NEWS OF INDIA
CHENNAI, JULY 3: It was target practice for the South African-bound IHF Seniors XI as they pummelled Hyderabad XI 8-0 in a group A league match in the 77th All India MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup Hockey tournament here today.Later, in a group B match, IHF juniors squandered a 1-0 lead at half time, before rallying back to hold Services XI 2-2.

IHF Seniors' domination was pronounced throughout the game. Dhanraj Pillay played a significant part in the victory as struck once in each half. The floodgates opened in the third minute with Rajnish Mishra scoring off a penalty corner.

After Dhanraj made it 2-0, Baljit Singh Chandy and Jagan Senthil scored in the 24th and 25th minutes for a 4-0 scoreline at halt-time. Four more goals in 21 minutes in second half by Brojen Singh, Dhanraj, Cheops D'Costa and Lazarus Barla completed the tally for the Seniors.

In the other match, IHF Juniors looked in control at half-time, holding on to 1-0 lead with the goal coming through Prabhjot Singh in the 28th minute. But Servicesnever gave up. They had lost to TN yesterday, but came up with an improved display today. The equaliser came through a penalty stroke conversion by Paramjit, which pepped up their team. They took the lead in the 59th minute through J Kujur.

But their hopes of tasting their first victory in the tournament went up in smoke as IHF Juniors made amends in the 65th minute. Iqbal Singh scoring the all-important equaliser to ensure that the team shared honours.

With a draw and a loss from two matches, Services chances of qualifying for the semifinal from the four-team group appears remote.
