Militants carve new routes to enter Rajouri & Poonch

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
JAMMU, JULY 4: A large number of militants, mostly foreign mercenaries, have sneaked into Rajouri and Poonch districts from across the Line of Control (LoC) through new infiltration routes during the past few months, official sources said on Sunday.

The sources told PTI that about 13 new infiltration routes have been used by the militants to enter the twin border districts with the sole motive of slaughtering people belonging to minority and majority communities thus forcing their migration and communalising the situation. Shunning the traditional routes due to increased vigil of security forces along the LoC the militants as per intelligence assessments have used 15 new routes in both these districts in recent past, they said. These include Sabra Gali, Chor Gali, Chamber Gali, Sona Gali, Kharha Draman, Jabdi Gali, Gagrian, Shalpur, Dabi Balakote, Kanwari, Salotri, Kaian, Tarkundi, Tralajagir and Jhandi Dhara.

Most of the upgraded weaponry reportedly procurred by the militants, include stinger missilesfor targeting helicopters carrying troops and 12.7 mm guns for using against the Army, have come through these routes, the sources said.

Replenishment of arms, cash and other accessories were easily coming into the country from the Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) region and these were then sent to militant cadres in Udhampur and Doda districts of Jammu region, the sources said.

They added, about 500 militants belonging to Hizbul Mujahideen (HM), Harkat-ul Jehadi Islami (HUJI), Harkat-ul-Mujahideen (HuM) and Lashker-e-Toiba (LeT) had entered Indian side since March this year with over 200 militants, including 65 foreign mercenaries, during March 1999.

Many foreign mercenaries were camping at PoK's Nikhil base camp, opposite Mendhar, for being pushed to Poonch district, they said. The recent massacres of 17 Muslims in Mendhar and Surankote on interveening night of June 28-29 and later ten Hindus in Ari village of Mendhar on July 1 in Poonch district is a part of broader plan of Pakistani agencies tocreate fear psychosis among the people and trigger exodus of people from militancy affected areas.
