AHMEDABAD, July 4: Police opened six rounds of fire and lobbed at least 75 teargas shells to control stone-throwing mobs after trouble broke out following the burning of Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's effigy near Dhal Ni Pol in the walled city on Sunday evening.Four shops were ransacked and torched by the rioters as police rushed in additional forces. A fire-fighter that went to the area was attacked and its glass-panes were smashed. Two fire men were also injured in the stone-throwing, along with at least 10 others.
Trouble erupted soon after the effigy-burning, when members of that group allegedly started pelting a nearby religious shrine with stones. The unrest spread to Manek Chowk, where a mob armed with pipes attacked people eating at stalls. The situation is tense but under control.
