PMT to defy RTA with six new routes

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PUNE, JULY 4: Retaliating against Regional Transport Authority's (RTA) decision to allow Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Transport (PCMT) to resume services on three disputed routes in Pune city, the Pune Municipal Transport has decided to launch six new routes in Pimpri-Chinchwad without seeking permission from RTA.

The service on the six routes will be launched at a function on July 7, announced PMT committee chairman Prakash Lodha at a press conferenceyesterdayThe six routes are PMC headquarters to Pimpri village, Pradhikaran, Chakan and Rajgurunagar via Bhosari, Swargate to Pimpri village, Pradhikaran and Chakan and Rajgurunagar via Bhosari.

``PCMT has started bus service on 38 routes in Pune city without obtaining permission from RTA. We have so far not objected to that. However, we would stop PCMT buses from plying on city roads if PCMT tried to prevent PMT buses from on plying six routes,'' he warned.

Lodha accused RTA of favouring PCMT over the issue and threatened that he would launch an agitation if RTA did not stop PCMT from operating on three controversial routes.

Lodha claimed that RTA's decision amount to contempt of court since Bombay High Court had stayed its decision to allow PCMT to ply its buses on three roads in Pune.

He said the court later allowed PCMT to run the buses till June 17. Lodha maintained that RTA could not unilaterally grant permission to the PCMT if the matter was still pending with the high court. He said he was seriously contemplating to draw high court's attention to the RTA decision.

It may be recalled that the RTA had allowed the PCMT to ply its buses on the three controversial routes in Pune city on Friday night.
