PUNE, JULY 4: The Nigdi Regional Transport Office's special cell along the Mumbai-Pune highway at Vadgaon Maval to check permits of tourist buses, and overloading of goods in trucks, has collected a fine of Rs 17.73 lakh from the defaulters during the last three months since the cell was opened.According to the assistant regional transport officer D M Gunjkar, most tourist buses from states other than Maharashtra do not have the valid transport permits. Penal fines were recovered from the drivers who did not have the permits, valid licences or other registration documents of the vehicles. The cell has also been checking overloading of trucks. The cell was opened in April.
Gunjkar said that the fine could have been much higher if requisite staff was sanctioned for the cell to function for all the twenty-four hours. At present the cell works only in one shift and that too with a bare minimum staff of the Nigdi office. The Nigdi RTO itself is facing a severe shortage of manpower against the rising workload.
