City players hail victory as best

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, JULY 7: ``This is the final nail in the coffin. Even the dead will have to wake up to tennis now,'' said coach Jaideep Vazirani, reacting to Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi's doubles win at Wimbledon today.

Tennis followers were obviously upbeat following the win, reacting with joy and pride while the few players that The Indian Express spoke to, derived inspiration from the Indian duo's performance their second Grand Slam title.

``This is bound to create a following. Lots will be glued to their TV sets from now on,'' added Vazirani. ``We have had few heroes, now we have two.''The All India Tennis Association (AITA) will consider a suitable way of honouring the two at their meeting on August 7 but secretary Ramesh Desai was upbeat about the ``best thing to have happened to tennis''. ``I hope they win the other two (US Open and Australian Open) too.''

Players Harsh Mankad and Sonal Phadke agreed that the win would be inspirational to all players. ``I am proud of them. It will help othersbelieve that they can do it too. Indian tennis should pick up from here,'' said Mankad. ``It gives players someone to look up to, like Sachin Tendulkar is to cricket,'' he added. ``Players will believe they can do it too.''``I supported them throughout and they deserved to win,'' said Phadke, adding that the win should motivate more players to take doubles seriously.Umpire Nitin Kannamwar, who met the duo at Wimbledon after their quarter-finals, said Indian sport lovers will have something else to look forward to besides cricket. Also a coach, Kannamwar agreed that it would help motivating children to take their tennis more seriously.

``One of the boys with me at Wimbledon was thrilled to have his picture taken with Bhupathi, he was in heaven. Children will know them now and it will be easier to convince parents too that success can be achieved in the sport using them as examples,'' he added.

Another coach Mayur Vasant said, ``Now children have a role model they can associate with, someone closer homeunlike the Sampras' and Grafs who are stars you can not touch.'' But there is lots the two Indians can do now in terms of promoting the sport. Vasant believes that if they devote some time to tennis in India, playing with juniors and attending camps, it will go a long way in pomoting the sport.
