Extending a line to the Kargil jawans

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, JULY 5: Taking a cue from The Indian Express initiative to give our jawans on the frontline a chance to call home, the Shaheed Parivar Suraksha Nidhi has decided to buy 10 satellite telephones from Iridium for the cause. Set up by the Bhartiya Vidya Bhawan, the Shahid Parivar Nidhi will give 10 Iridium telephones to the Army for the specific use of jawans in the Kargil sector.

Former Member of Parliament Murli Deora says: ``Every Indian feels that they should do something for the boys fighting there. We felt the same and started the Shahid Parivar Nidhi the day we got news of the first soldier who died in action. We wanted to use the money we had collected for them and what better way than giving them a chance to talk to their loved ones.''Deora has also requested Prime Minister A B Vajpayee to waive certain DoT charges so that the calls are cheaper. The phones are likely to be with the jawans by the end of the week.
