State V-Cs meet held in Gandhinagar

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
VADODARA, JULY 5: A meeting of all the Vice-Chancellors of universities in the state was held at Gandhinagar on Monday to discuss various pending issues. The meeting was presided over by minister of state for education Bharat Barot.

Vice-Chancellor of M S University Anil Kane represented, among other things, the problems concerning teaching vacancies. Though the government in its recent resolution had instructed universities to surrender 15 per cent of their teaching posts, MSU has had a 30 per cent shortfall in teaching staff for four years now, he said.

``Even if the government asks us to surrender 15 per cent, they still have to permit us to recruit for the other 15 per cent of the posts,'' said Kane. He added that Barot had said that 180 teaching posts would be sanctioned for MSU. Kane said that other proposals for staff welfare included providing them with vehicular allowance. The V-C's have also demanded that the retiring age in various faculties, which vary now, should be made identical, and registrars and others in the administrative section of universities should be paid as per University Grants Commission recommendations, said Kane.
