SURAT, JULY 5: A police constable has been booked under sections of the Prohibition Act after being caught in an inebriated state while on duty. Bharat Jeevan (badge no 2448) was arrested by Chowk Bazaar police inspector R G Jadeja at 1:45 am on Monday morning from beside the police station lock up where he was posted.The arrest was made after rickshaw driver Sureshchandra Modi approached the police, saying that the constable had abused and threatened him around midnight.
According to Modi, he was with his vehicle at Variyav bazaar police chowky when the constable approached him and started using abusive language. He informed inspector Jadeja, who then arrested the constable, who had, by then resumed his duty at the police station.
There have been at least a dozen policemen against whom action has been initiated in the past six months for getting drunk on duty.
