A-I's flight to win via Hyderabad

UNITED NEWS OF INDIA
CHENNAI, JULY 5: Air-India made the most of a hapless Hyderabad XI recording a thumping 5-1 win to taste their first success in a Group A match of the All-India MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup hockey tournament here today.

Services finished their engagements in the tournament without a win. They drew with Mumbai and IHF Juniors and lost to Tamil Nadu 0-1.

The airmen, who were held to a 3-3 draw by Karnataka the other day, found an easy prey in Hyderabad, the whipping boys of the tournament. Air-India did not stretch themselves much and goals came at a fairly easy pace. The fact that they earned as many as ten penalty corners proved the domination of the airmen. Hyderabad were reduced to mere spectators.

Len Aiyappa started the goal riot with a direct shot off a penalty corner in the tenth minute and Gavin Ferreira struck twice in either side of the session to make it 3-0. First he scored from a Cornelius D'Costa pass off a penalty corner in the 32nd minute and then provided the finishing touches to a combinedmove by Madan Vishwanath and Darryl D'Souza in the 40th minute.

Mohd Fahad struck twice in the space of ten minutes to make it 5-0, before Hyderabad got some consolation scoring in the last minute of the match through Rajinder, who scored off the third penalty corner.

Later, Services, though not not in the race for a semi-final berth, came up with a heartening display. Mumbai, on the other hand after their 1-0 win against Tamil Nadu in their opening match, once again were tested to the limit.

In fact Mumbai should have trooped out winners after gaining the lead in the 67th minute. But the armymen showed better gumption and got the equaliser with seconds remaining to bow out honourably.

Both the teams shared two goals in the first half. After Services forged ahead in the eighth minute through their pivot PL Murugappan, who scored off a pass from Balbir Singh, Mumbai fought hard and got the equaliser in the 26th minute through their experienced forward Shanta kumar, with medio Mukhtiar Singh doing thespade work.

The contest provided some lively moments with action switching ends frequently. Services' Kujur, Cyprian Minz combined well with Murugappan with speedy work down the flanks, while Shanta Kumar spearheaded the Mumbai attack. Though Sabu Varkey and Ravi Nayakar could not do much, it was left to Chanderpal and Allen Barla to man the midfield with Mukhtiar Singh and Callistus D'Souza adding verve in the frontline.

Though Mumbai were reduced to ten players when Allen Barla was suspended temporarily for an infringement on Murugappan, Mumbai kept up good pace with the rivals.

Both the goalkeepers also had a busy day showing good reflexes in effecting fine saves. Shanta Kumar missed an easy shot with only army custodian RVS Prasad to beat in the 28th minute of the second half. But he amends with a superb effort four minutes later. A long cross from the right by Chanderpaul came through the crowded defence and Shantakumar stationed near the goal mouth trapped it well to slot the ball home.

When itlooked like Mumbai had won the match, came the equaliser. Anil Minz Jr's fierce shot from the right was deflected into the goal by Cyprian Aind, which coincided with the hooter.
