Otters Club A bag squash title

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, JULY 5: Otters Club A beat back a strong challenge from their second string to win the Professional Squash Association's Jindal Cup handicap team event at the Jindal Recreation Centre, Vasind, about 35km from Mumbai, yesterday evening.

The handicap, revised after every game depending upon a player's performance, proved to be a great leveller. Thus every match went the full distance. Otters A were seemingly coasting towards victory when Abhijit Kukreja beat Parth Doshi and Gaurav Mittal defeated Mihir Kapoor to put them 2-0 ahead.

However, Otters B fought back to draw level through Vishal Kapoor who beat Sanjay Pawar and Santosh More who overcame Vijay Sonawane at 17-15 in the decider.

Otters A could not be denied though as Gaurav Juneja used his considerable experience to battle a 11-point handicap and Taran Machra and clinch the fifth and final match. His consistency and clever use of the high ball enabled Juneja to force Machra into committing mistakes.

Otters A were rewarded with Rs 6,000in prize-money for their efforts. Otters B received Rs 4,000. It was an exhausting weekend for the 10 teams who had a tough schedule of matches in the league-cum-knock-out format but it was fun as they were able to get away from the hustle and bustle of Mumbai and were provided with board and lodge by Jindal.

Vikas Jangra of Jindal Recreation Centre was adjudged the most promising player and was awarded a trophy.
