China, US blank rivals, in final

Jim Slater
FOXBORO, JULY 5: China crushed reigning champion Norway to reach the women's World Cup soccer finals against the United States, who outlasted Brazil in Sunday's other semi-final match.

Chinese captain Sun Wen and Liu Ailing each scored twice in a 5-0 romp here while Michelle Akers converted a penalty kick and shut down overall Cup scoring co-leader Sissi in a 2-0 US triumph.

Saturday's championship game at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, features a rematch of the 1996 Olympic final won by the host US team, which has lost two of three prior matches against China this year. "This is probably the best team we've had in a few years," China coach Ma Yuanan said. "Next Saturday, the next team we play will be stronger."

China's two 1999 victories over the US team, both by 2-1, came at the Algarve Cup final in Portugal in March and in April at East Rutherford, New Jersey, to snap a 50-match US unbeaten streak on home soil.

The political rivals face added tensions from off the field due to the NATO airbombing of Yugoslavia. Three people were killed when a missile struck China's embasy in Belgrade.

Sun began the scoring in the third minute on a left-footed shot off a rebound and hit the last goal in the 72nd on a penalty kick to match Sissi for tournament top scorer honors.

Liu added rocket-like goals in the 14th and 51st minutes, both off clearing attempts from just inside the penalty area. The first came on a half-volley while the second was a running full-volley blast.

At Palo Alto, California, Cindy Parlow scored on a header in the fifth minute and Akers added a penalty in the 80th while Briana Scurry made six saves in her 52nd international shutout before nearly 74,000 spectators.

The triumph, making the US 9-1 with one drawn all-time over Brazil, came on the US Independence Day holiday in the same stadium where exactly five years ago Brazil's men edged the US team 1-0 in the 1994 World Cup.

Scurry made a tough punch save over the crossbar on a shot by defender Nene in the 46th minute. Scurrydenied her again 10 minutes later, diving to her right to knock away a 12-yard blast.

In the 80th minute, Akers headed a ball ahead to Mia Hamm, who raced down the left side of the pitch. She was fouled in the penalty area by Elene and Finnish referee Katriina Elovirta gave the US a penalty shot. Akers waited patiently before burying a shot into the right corner of the net past Maravilha, who guessed correctly but could not stop it.
