Bakshi stays; BHA will become MHA

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, JULY 5: Dilbagh Singh Bakshi was unanimously elected president of the Bombay Hockey Association at its 63rd Annual General Meeting today. Mr Bakshi, who had taken charge of the post after it had fallen vacant in 1997, will stay in office for another three years.

The AGM elected Phulel Singh Sujlana and Virinder Singh Anand as vice-presidents; KL Passi continues to be secretary, while Govind Chokhani has been retained treasurer.

All the posts, including the nine committee members, were filled unopposed.

The elections followed a week of hectic parleys and compromises which saw former Mayor Manmohan Singh Bedi pulling out of the race for the presidentship.

The compromise package saw Bedi's nephew Gurbux Singh Saigal being nominated to the committee; to accommodate him, Bakshi's trusted man Charanjit Singh Chadha, chairman of the Punjab Co-operative Bank, withdrew his candidature.

Bakshi's son-in-law Daljit Singh Gujral also finds a place in the group of nine. The breakaway HAM finds threerepresentations, in Olympians Joaquim Carvalho, Iqbaljit Singh and Gurbux Singh Grewal.

Commenting on his induction, Carvalho said, ``we are drawing up a calendar and we hope the bring the gold cup and international hockey back to the city.''

A resolution was also passed to rename the BHA as the Mumbai Hockey Association (MHA). It was passed with only one member dissenting on technical grounds.
