Kargil Calling -- Vadodara

Vadodara soldier wounded
Vadodara-resident Captain Hamirsinh Rathod of the Indian Army's Grenadiers has been wounded in the ongoing war in Kargil and has been admitted to a Chandigarh hospital. His mother Aruna, a former teacher at M S University's Faculty of Fine Arts, told Express Newsline her son was ``all right though he has been hit in both the legs. One of his legs has been fractured by a bullet and another wounded by splinters''. Capt Rathod's wife Rashmi and her father, Indian Air Force Group Capt (retd) Ashok Chitre, flew to Chandigarh on Tuesday morning. The family was informed of Rathod's hospitalisation on Monday.

A large number of local political leaders, including mayor Bharati Vyas and Congress president Ashwin Shah, have called on the family.

Children rally for Kargil cause
Eight students of Tejas Vidyalaya -- Jvalin Pandya, Kavan Pandya, Rutu Pandya, Jhalak Daftari, Karan Daftari, Ruju Shah, Nija Shah and Lajja Shahin -- all in the eight-to-14 age group have donated Rs 800 to the Kargil Disabled Soldiers' Fund after their parents apprised them of what was going on in Kargil. Each of them fasted one day, and collected Rs 100 from their parents as the money they would have spent on fast food and soft drinks.

12-hour effort by nine-year-olds
Two nine-year-old girls, Manikiran and Shrutee, will play the harmonium for 12 hours continuously to raise funds for family members of Kargil war victims. The function, which will take place at the Polo Ground Kirti Stambh on July 11 between 7 am and 7 pm, will be attended by the mayor, the collector, the police commissioner and the municipal commissioner. The amount collected will be handed over to the prime minister.

Congress to collect funds
The city unit of the Congress will take out a rally in Vadodara on Wednesday to collect funds for family members of jawans who have lost their lives fighting in Kargil. The rally will start from Mandvi at 4 p.m. and culminate at Kothi before passing through Nyay Mandir, Ahmedabadi Pole and Raopura.

Bank workers asked to give day's pay
The chairman and managing director of the Syndicate Bank on Tuesday appealed to the bank staff to contribute a day's salary for the soldiers fighting the Pakistani intruders in Kargil. A bank release said that the staff training college of the bank, staff of Mandvi, Raopura and Alkapuri branches here had immediately responded to the call.

Muslims rally against intrusion
Surat: The All-Surat Muslim Association will hold a massive rally against the Pakistani intrusion in Kargil on Wednesday. Hundreds of school children and Muslims from all walks of life are expected to join the rally at 2.30 pm. Starting from Bhagal Char Rasta, the rally will reach the collectorate after passing through Bhaga talav and Napura. A memorandum will be presented to collector.

Trust formed to collect funds
Residents of Surat-Rander road have formed a trust -- Manav Seva Parishad -- to collect funds for families of Kargil martyrs. The Parishad has organised a rally on July 10, which will begin from Adajan crossroads and end near the residence of slain municipal councillor Nitaben Satbhaya. The trust is headed by Jitendra Dalia, who is associated with Surat Citizens' Council and Andhajan Shikshan Mandal.
