Shakti grabs double, Kenyans go miles

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JULY 6: Shakti Singh won a double in the discus and shot put, and Anju Marcose of Tamil Nadu showed her talent in recording a personal best of 6.24 metres in long jump as most of the athletes improved their performance in the second of the four AAFI International Athletic Meet held at the University Stadium here today.

Indian athletes won ten out of 15 gold while the visitors claimed five.

In the shot put, Bangkok Asian Games silver medallist Shakti Singh bettered his performance by 12 cm than in the first circuit. He hurled the iron ball to 18.99 metres. However, this fell short of his national record of 19.73 metres. Shakti claimed the discus gold by swinging it to 56.55 metres.

Anju Marcose leaped to 6.24 metres which was a personal best of the 24-year-old Customs employee from Tamil Nadu. GG Pramile, who came first in Nagercoil, finished behind Anju with 6.03 which was also her best performance.

Kenyans ruled long-distance events, claiming gold in 1500m and 5000m. In thelatter, Charles Kamati of Kenya was first, returning with a time of 13:45.91.

Men: 400: P Ramachandran 47.18s, Felix Leboo (Kenya) 47.40, Jata Shankar.

1500: Gideon Chirchir (Kenya) 3:44.73, Joseph Mutua (Kenya) 3:47.12, Mainade Dedan (Kenya) 3:47.15

5000: Charles Kamathi (Kenya) 13:45.91; Mohmoodian (Iran) 14:36.32; Zarekar Ahmed (Iran) 14:36.40.

Long jump: Jean Paul Arnudc (Mauritius) 7.84m; Anil Kumar 7.42m; Mestechkin Rostislav (Ukrain) 7.36m.

Shot put: Shakti Singh 18.99m; Bhahadur Singh 18.25m; Jasveer Singh 17.35m.

Discus: Shakti Singh 56.55m; Hridayannad 56.23m; Anil Kumar 53.50m.

Hammer: Pramod Tewari 65.88m; Virender Poonia 64.23m; Naresh Choudhari 63.17m.

Javelin: Jagadishkumar 72.80m; Ramandeep Singh 69.80m; BS Dubey 68.10m.

WOMEN: 100m: Saraswati Dey 11.86; Hellen Chemitai (Kenya) 12.24; Vinita Tripathi 12.27.

400m: Jincy Philip 54.27; MK Asha 54.29; Paramjit Kaur 55.40.

1500m: Sunita Rani4:13.84; Hannah Njeri (Kenya) 4:22.03; Rosakutty 4:34.21.

Discus: 1 Neelam J Singh 58.58m; Sugan Yadav 53.28m; Harjeet Kaur 51.23m.
