Cricketers, film stars to play Kargil benefit football match

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
NEW DELHI, JULY 8: Almost the entire Indian cricket team and top Hindi film stars will come together on July 11 to play a benefit football match here to raise funds for the families of soldiers who have died or were wounded in the Kargil operations.

Former India captain Kapil Dev, announced at a press conference on Wednesday that a minimum guarantee amount of Rs one crore would be raised from the tie to be held at the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium and handed over to the Army Central Welfare Fund.

Sachin Tendulkar, Ajay Jadeja, Rahul Dravid and Saurav Ganguly will be part of the team of cricketers while Shahrukh Khan, Govinda, Nana Patekar, Sanjay Dutt, Anil Kapoor, Akshay Kumar, Mithun Chakraborty and Gulshan Grover will be in the lineup of the film stars.

Kapil Dev, who called for snapping all sporting ties with Pakistan after he and current Indian vice-captain Ajay Jadeja recently visited injured jawans in Srinagar, said ``people are giving their lives for the country. We know whatever funds we raise willnot bring them back to life''.

``But it is only to convey the solidarity of sportsmen and film stars who have entertained people for many years, and that of the people and give back something to the jawans who are sacrificing their lives," he said.

Kapil Dev said Sahara India will organise the match and entry will be through donor passes and tickets that will be available in all Archie galleries in the capital.

Matinee idols Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna, Raj Babbar, Jeetendra and actresses Shabana Azmi, Preity Zinta and Raveena Tandon will be among those present as special guests.

Kapil Dev said Indian skipper Mohd Azharuddin will not be present as he was recovering in London after shoulder surgery.

The organisers have planned a performance by artistes Remo, Shankar Mahadevan, Kavita Krishnamurthy and Sapna Mukherjee during halftime while Shekhar Suman and Durga Jasraj will be the comperes of the programme.

The match, to kick-off at 1830 hours, will be telecast live by Doordarshan.

AjayJadeja, who with Kapil Dev is taking the initiative for the match, said ``they (soldiers) look at us as heroes. But we're not a patch on them. We don't even realise what they are doing for us and this match is only to show our solidarity.''

``The spirit of the jawans was incredible despite the fact that the enemy was at an advantage occupying the heights. Someone had to get up there and remove them, nobody knew how many lives will have to be sacrificed, but they all wanted to be the first to die," he said.
