Cong student activists held for sneaking into WB House

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CALCUTTA, JULY 8: In an unprecedented incident over 21 Chatra Parishad (CP) activists, the students' wing of the Congress, giving security the slip, entered the West Bengal House this afternoon and succeeded in throwing the Assembly into pandemonium.

At about 3.05 pm the CP leaders barged into the Assembly area in five cars, giving the security no chance to react and entered the House shouting slogans, taking the ruling Left Front and the Opposition Congress by surprise.

Instant chaos gripped the House which was discussing the panchayat budget. However, when the House, after two adjournments, reassembled again all the trespassers were tried and Speaker H A Halim sentenced them to three days' simple imprisonment.

The CP leaders were irked by the recent Government decision to discontinue the higher secondary (Plus Two) course at 30-odd colleges from this academic session. It has affected thousands of students who had just passed the Madhyamik (secondary) examinations.

The failure of security staff camein for severe criticism both by the ruling LF and the Opposition Congress. Government chief whip Robin Mondal while criticizing the police for security lapses, urged the Speaker to take action against them.

Later, speaking to media persons, Speaker said the the CP leaders' action was unfortunate and the sanctity of the House had been violated. When State Minister for Home (Police) Buddhadev Bhattacharaya was asked about his reaction on the security failure, fudging a straight answer, he said: ``The Chatra Parishad action was pre-planned hooliganism.''

Congress members, who were unhappy over the Speaker's ruling, staged a noisy walk-out. The CLP sources said they might decide to boycott the House for three days.
