VADODARA, July 8: The police last night arrested Atul Purani and Chandra Prakash Barot who allegedly cheated the Shrikrishna Sahkari Bank on Champaner Road to the tune of Rs 20.39 lakh between September 1998 and May this year.The suspects deposited fake national saving certificates (NSC) issued by the post office and obtained loans against them. A loan to the tune of 75 per cent of the total value of the NSC can be taken. According to the police, the two suspects had deposited fake NSCs worth Rs 27 lakh.
Purani deposited NSCs worth Rs 10,000 on September 30, 1998, Rs 1.30 lakh on October 5, 2.20 lakh on October 6, Rs 2.90 lakh on October 7, Rs 3.10 lakh on October 8 and Rs 2.90 lakh on October 9 and withdrew as loan Rs 7,500, Rs 97,500, Rs 1.95 lakh, Rs 1.95 lakh, Rs 2.32 lakh and Rs 2.17 lakh against the deposits.
Barot deposited NSCs worth Rs one lakh on December 4, 1998, Rs 2 lakh on Decedmber 11, Rs 1 lakh on December 24, Rs 1 lakh on January 5, 1999, Rs 2 lakh on January 12, Rs 2.4 lakh on January 28, Rs 60,000 on February 11, Rs 1 lakh on February 18 and Rs 1 lakh on May 18. He withdrew more than Rs 8 lakh against these deposits. The cheating came to light recently when an anonymous caller informed the bank's branch manager Anilbhai Bhusane about fake NSCs being deposited in his bank.
