Need for safety audits

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
VADODARA, July 8: Deputy General Manager (Training) of Gujarat Refinery B N Bankapur has advocated the need for safety audits in industries. He was inaugurating a two-day workshop on ``Safety Audit'' organised recently by the Gujarat Safety Council.

Terming the safety audit a useful technique for industrial management, Bankapur said that due to advances in technology, the plant complexity has increased and it demands improvement and upgradation of various operational processes.

Speaking on the occasion, honourary general secretary of the Council Dr P T Shah said safety audits can help to obtain a systematic and critical appraisal of the effectiveness of the safety programmes of industrial units. He said that safety programmes should be evaluated continuously because the working environment changes constantly due to new employees, new work processes, new materials and revised standards.

Council Vice-Chairman Ashwin Gandhi said that safety programmes played a vital role in accident prevention. He said such training programmes would be useful in updating employees knowledge and clearing misconceptions.

Deputy Chief Inspector of Factories S R Bodar said the safety audit has been made a statutory requirement.
