Muslims hold rally in support of Kargil action

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
SURAT, July 8: Thousands of Muslims, shouting anti-Pakistan slogans and carrying messages of solidarity with India and the Indian armed forces, held an impressive rally that winded its way through the main thoroughfares and reached the collectorate on Wednesday evening, where a memorandum was handed over to collector Sangeeta Singh.

The rally, which included tens of trucks, horse-driven carts, two-wheelers and people on foot, was held under the aegis of the All Surat Muslim Association. Besides a couple of music bands which belted out patriotic numbers, youngsters dressed as Indian soldiers and a mounted replica of the Bofors gun were part of the rally. A large number of women and children participated in the rally which passed through Bhagal, Chowk, Gandhi Baug, Makkai Pool, Dutch Road and Nanpura before reaching the collectorate.

The highlights of the rally were energetic slogan shouting against Pakistan and signboards that the rallyists were carrying which were also stuck onto vehicles. Some of the slogans aimed at Pakistan were: ``Kashmir to kya, Kashmir ki kali bhi nahi lene denge (Why Kashmir, you cannot take away even a flower bud from Kashmir)'' ``Kashmir nahin denge, Pakistan bhi lenge (We will even snatch away Pakistan)'', ``Hamein pyara hein hamara vatan (We love our homeland), ``Jung tumne Chhedi hain, anjaam hum dikhaenge. Harna tera muqaddar hain, jeet ka jashn hum manayenge (You sparked the war, we will teach you a lesson. Defeat is your destiny, we will celebrate victory) etc. There were also condolences for the Indian armed forces who lost their lives and encouragement for those fighting at the border.

So huge was the rally that while those marching at the head had already reached the collectorate, those at the end were still at Chowk Bazaar about two kilometres away. Halfway through the rally, there was a sharp shower but that did not dampen the rallyists' spirits.

Later handing over the memorandum to the collector, the city's Muslim leaders strongly condemned the Pakistani intrusion, saluted the heroic deeds of our jawans who have attained martyrdom in the Kargil sector and expressed firm solidarity with those fighting the enemy on the border. Speaking at the end of the rally, Nayeem Quadri, member of the ASMA ad hoc committee, told the gathering that the collector had faxed a copy of the memorandum to the President of India. Copies have been sent to the PM the state Governor, CM and the chief of Army Staff.
