BHAVNAGAR, JULY 9: Pakistan may step up the proxy war against India after its failure in Punjab, Kashmir and Kargil, Union Home Minister L K Advani said here today. He was talking to reporters after laying the foundation stone for conversion of the Surendranagar-Bhavnagar metre-gauge line into broad-gauge.Advani cautioned that India would have to remain vigilant even after the Kargil conflict ended.
Expressed apprehension on Pakistan's plans to withdraw, Advani said, ``If Pakistan vacates our land it will not happen due to Washington's appeal but due to the humiliating defeat at the hands of our soldiers,'' he said. Indian forces would fight till the last intruder was thrown out, the Union Minister said.
With diplomatic isolation of Pakistan being total and Indian forces capturing peak after peak, Advani said India was in a win-win situation now. Welcoming the donation of Rs 30 lakh by Alang Shipbreaking Association for the families of martyrs, he said every effort should be made to ensure support forthe families of soldiers who had laid down their lives for the country.
Advani claimed the BJP-led coalition government had helped the nation prosper even in the face of various difficulties and despite being in governance for a short period.
Railway Minister Nitish Kumar, who accompanied Advani, said the gauge conversion project would be completed as early as possible. There would be no paucity of funds in successful completion of the project, he added. He said the Railways had given top priority to this project, which was estimated to cost around Rs 365 crore.
State BJP president Rajendrasinh Rana and local leaders were among those present at the function. Chief Minister Keshubhai Patel, however, could not make it as he had gone to attend the last rites of the soldiers from the state who laid down their life in Kargil.
Speaking at the function, former MP Bhavnaben Dave urged Nitish Kumar to extend the conversion project to Dhrangandhra, which had an Army Camp. The Minister assured that the 37-kmdistance from Surendranagar to Dhrangandhra would also be included in the project.
Western Railway general manager Vasudev Gupta announced that a new train from Gandhidham to New Delhi would soon be started.
Later, Advani also flagged off the newly introduced metre-guage diesel-multiple unit (dmu) train service between Mehsana and Taranga Hills and laid the foundation stone for widening of the under-bridge in Meshana.
