Girl sues parents for forcible marriage bid

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHANDIGARH, July 9: On a petition filed here by a city girl against her parents and brothers for their alleged interference in her civil rights, a city court has issued notice to the respondents for July 15.

Taking up the petition filed by Rupa, a 20-year-old resident of Dadu Majra Colony here, wherein she has alleged that her parents were forcing her to marry someone against her wishes, UT Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Harminder Singh Madaan has summoned Ram Saroop and Sarbati, parents of the plaintiff, along with her four brothers for July 15.

The girl, who stated that she had to flee from her house due to "adverse circumstances created by her parents", has sought intervention of the court to prevent her parents from forcibly performing her marriage. In her petition, Rupa stated that, except for the past about one month, she had been living with her parents since her birth.

She stated that her parents had been pressing her to marry someone and alleged that she was being "sold" for money. She further alleged that her parents and brothers had threatened to kill her in case she went against their wishes in this matter.

The girl who fled about a month back, is presently staying with some well wisher in Haryana.

She stated that she was a major and her parents had no cause to force her to marry against her wishes. She added that when she revolted against her family, they threatened to kill her. The plaintiff also stated that she wanted to marry someone else and had proposed the same to her parents who, instead of conceding her wishes, served an ultimatum on her.

The case will now come up on July 15 for reply by the respondents.
