Eateries raided; Nine held

Arvind Chhabra
CHANDIGARH, July 9: City restauranteurs were among at least nine persons arrested when police of the crime branch raided hotels here tonight.

According to sources, the raiding party comprised almost all personnel of the Crime Branch; eateries raided included Jalandhar Hotel, Singh Chicken Corner and Tehal Singh Chicken Corner, all situated in Sector 22.

Police sources said that they had information that some persons had been drinking at a public place and creating nuisance outside certain places.

Four persons were arrested from inside the Jalandhar hotel while they were allegedly drinking even as the hotel does not have the license for that, said police sources. Those arrested are Tejinder Singh of Sector 32, Arvinder Kumar of Sector 19, Mahesh Kumar of Gobindgarh and Jagtaran Singh of Ludhiana. The hotel officials are absconding, added the police sources. A few other persons also managed to run away as the police swooped on the place.

Sources further added that Singh Chicken Corner owner Baljit Singh was arrested for serving drinks to Sector 18 resident Sanjay Chowdhury and Sector 37 resident Bihari Lal, both of whom were also arrested. They were drinking outside the cafe. Sector 16 resident Vikas and Manimajra resident Harish Kumar were allegedly drinking outside the Tehal Singh Chicken Corner.

Medical examination confirmed that the customers were drunk. The police registered a case under the Excise Act against each of them.
