Shivaji, Tukaram tete-a-tete in offing!

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PUNE, July 9: A unique project titled Bhakti-Shakti, portraying the historic meeting of Chattrapati Shivaji and Sant Tukaram, is taking shape at Nigdi.

The project, depicting a meeting of spiritualism and strength, encompasses a collection of 14 bronze statues including that of Chhatrapati Shivaji and Sant Tukaram. The project, undertaken by the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), will be inaugurated by Governor Dr P C Alexander on July 21.

The inauguration of the project this year has an added significance as it was 350 years ago that Sant Tukaram left for the heavenly abode. It was conceived four years ago. The entire project will be on a high hillock, along the Mumbai-Pune highway in sector 23 of Nigdi, at the boundary of the PCMC and the Dehu Road cantonment limits.

The project is a marvel of its kind with the statues of Chhatrapati Shivaji and Sant Tukaram rising to a height of 20 feet. The statues of Chhatrapati Shivaji's soldiers (dharkaris) and warkaris are 10 feet high. Noted sculptor Madan Garge of Garge Art Studio, Nashik has been assigned the work of making the statues. The PCMC is also planning to start a light-and-sound show to relate the historic significance of the project.

Hectic preparations are on to complete the work of landscaping and beautification around the hillock. Decorative pathways in special macharala stone will be constructed while the pedestal work is in black granite stone. The area around the pedestal will have a marble flooring. A decorative gate will adorn the entrance. The statues will be installed by July 15, Mayor Madhukar Pawle said.

The PCMC has incurred an expenditure of Rs 1.1 crore on the project.
