PUNE, July 9: After a successful run of ten years, Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU) will now probe the idea of incorporating new concepts in distance-education using the latest tools of information technology.Stating this at the 10th anniversary celebration function of YCMOU held at Abasaheb Garware College recently, vice chancellor of the open university Dr Ashok Pradhan said that the ``functioning of the varsity will be reviewed for better performance.''
In the changing scenario, it has become very essential that the distance education is kept abrest of the latest technology. Keeping this into mind use of audio-visual media and emerging concept of virtual classroom through internet will be looked into in the coming days, Pradhan said. Giving a brief account of varsity's performance in one decade, Pradhan said that so far about 3.25 lakh people had successfully completed their studies under 50 various courses offered by the varstiy.
Speaking on the occasion noted socialist Prof G P Pradhan extolled the varsity for realising `education for everyone' vision of late Chief Minister Yashwantrao Chavan.
He said the open university provides ample scope for innovation in education. ``Real education is one that sets people free from all barriers and throws open the doors to knowledge. It should be such that the students develop an urge for exploring the vast ocean of knowledge throughout their life,'' said Prof Pradhan.
Bharati Vidyapeeth vice-chancellor Dr Uttamrao Bhoite described YCMOU as a novel experiment in higher education in Maharashtra. ``The realm of an open university is far beyond the limits of conventional universities which are languishing in the age-old concept of afffiliation system,'' said Bhoite.
