EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, July 17: The Governor Dr PC Alexander has promulgated an ordinance amending the Mumbai Motor Vehicles Tax Act, 1958, empowering the state government to levy toll on vehicles passing over bridges, flyovers, by-pass roads of the state government's integrated special projects. A press release issued by the Governor's office today states that the ordinance has come into effect from July 15th.

The toll is being levied to recover the expenses incurred by the state government in building new bridges, flyovers etc under the integrated special projects and enable the government to allocate funds for other essential development projects.

The release also said that the toll will be levied only till the time the `capital outlay' involved in the construction, reconstruction etc under such projects is recovered.
