EC to meet Andhra officials on poll code

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, JULY 17: The Election Commission has called a meeting with Andhra Pradesh officials next week in the wake of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu's plea that welfare projects should not be affected by the model code of conduct.

The State Chief Secretary and Chief Electoral Officer are to meet Chief Election Commissioner M S Gill and the two commissioners at a meeting here on July 21 to discuss the objections raised by Naidu to the EC's restrictions on the implementation of welfare measures.

After going over the objections and reviewing all aspects of the clarifications sought by the Andhra Pradesh Government, the Commission would issue further orders "as deemed fit", Nirvachan Sadan sources said.

The Election Commission, while announcing the Lok Sabha election schedule, had directed state governments to keep in abeyance certain welfare schemes till the poll process was over.

Naidu had objected to this blanket restriction, arguing that halting some of the schemes his Governmenthad launched, including a gas subsidy programme involving 10 lakh gas connections for rural women, would prolong the hardships faced by people.

Insisting that his Government was not violating the model code of conduct, Naidu said these were on-going programmes conceived and launched well before the announcement of the election schedule.
