TEHRAN, JULY 18: The Iranian intelligence ministry on Sunday accused foreign nations of backing the recent unrest at Tehran University, blaming the troubles on ``counter-revolutionary'' elements outside the country. In a statement read on state radio the ministry said that some of those arrested in the disturbances had confessed to ``being backed by foreign countries.''``Some of the counter-revolutionaries arrested who played an important role in the recent events -- chanting slogans, damaging property, starting fires -- have relations with other counter-revolutionary groups abroad,'' it said.
``Some took part in meetings with other counter-revolutionaries during trips to Turkey and the United States,'' it said, adding that others had been receiving money from foreign nations.
Meanwhile, more students were arrested in connection with the recent unrest, press reports said on Sunday. The moderate Neshat paper said several members of an Islamic student council close to reformist President MohammadKhatami that was due to hold a press conference Saturday were detained by the authorities. The press conference at Tehran University never took place and Neshat gave no further details on the arrests. But the English-language Iran News said local reporters who had been invited to the conference were turned away by security forces at the university.
