Panchkula's smell zone -- Sector 19

AMIT ROY
PANCHKULA, JULY 18: Behold this sight: office-goers and school children waiting for their buses with their handkerchiefs held to their noses. No they do not have cold. These Sector 19 residents are only trying to keep away the stink emanating from the adjoining Industrial Area. The foul smell emanating from the industrial waste is giving sleepless nights to the residents. They say that the situation is so bad at times that they are unable to even have their meals. And many people even complain of nausea.

The House Owners Welfare Association has in a written complaint expressed dissatisfaction over the administration's inaction. The residents alleged that some industrial units dump their chemical waste in the sewerage line that goes to the HUDA feeder plant. And this feeder plant falls near Sector 19.

The foul smell from the chemical waste has affected the whole sector, and has led to breathing problems among the residents. The residents complain that the problem is the worst at night and early mornings. On reaching home after a hard day's work, people are unable to get sleep. Morever, it is a matter of great concern, as this is a major source of pollution. And the foul smell from the chemical waste can prove hazardous to health.

The general secretary, House Owners Welfare Association, Sector 19, while explaining this distressing problem said that the association had written many times to the Pollution Control Board, Panchkula, but no official had turned up. Shiv Prashad, a resident, who is himself working in one of the units, says that he had recently shifted to the sector with his family but never knew of this problem. He had hired a house in this sector as it was closer to Industrial Area, but was now planning to shift. He said: "I can change my residence, but I can well imagine the plight of those having their own houses in this sector. Something must be done soon to tackle this problem that has made our lives hell !"
