SURAT, July 18: Municipal commissioner Guru Prasad Mohapatra has cancelled leave of all senior civic officials till September 3 in view of the monsoon. In case of any emergency, all civic officials have been asked to be ready to reach control rooms along with manpower and machinery.As per the Action Plan prepared by the Surat Municipal Corporation, control rooms have been set up in all six zones. The control rooms will remain open round the clock. Night cells have also been set up. Besides, the SMC has set up its own control rooms in the collectorate, police headquarters, and the irrigation department for better co-ordination with other agencies.
City Engineer K M Parekh claimed that the city's ``storm drain system is so efficient that even if there are heavy downpours, all the water will drain away in 30 minutes.'' However, to ensure that storm drain outlets do not get choked due to floating material like plastic, the city engineer has deployed staff at each storm drain outlet point.
Meanwhile, the district authorities have appointed liaison officers for six SMC zones who will co-ordinate with civic authorities to tackle monsoon-related problem. Resident Deputy Collector V D Asari said a contingency plan has been prepared for the city.
Meanwhile, the city received heavy rainfall this morning, but there has been no rain related mishap reported from any part of the city or district. While three talukas of the district -- Bardoli, Mandvi and Olpad -- received no rainfall, Uchhal, Kamrej, Songadh, Nizar, Valod, and Mahuwa received negligible rainfall (between 2 mm to 3 mm). Choryasi taluka in Surat district received the highest rainfall (49 mm), while Surat city received 46 mm in the last 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. In the last 11 hours there was no rainfall, though the sky remained overcast for most of Sunday.
In neighbouring Navsari district, Gandevi taluka received 29 mm rainfall, while Vansda and Jalapur recorded no rainfall in the last 24 hours. However, as a precautionary measure, mamlatdars of five talukas have been alerted in view of the heavy rain forecast for South Gujarat by July 19.
