Four youths jump in canal; three drown

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
SURAT, July 18: Fire brigade personnel on Sunday fished out the bodies of three of the four youths, who jumped into Koyli Khadi, off Bhatena I slums, near Ring Road on Saturday evening in a bid to escape from the police.

While one body was fished out by Sunday noon, the other two bodies were recovered by evening, the fire department said, adding that the fourth was rescued on Saturday evening.

Harish Gorakh Pawar (12), Ganesh Bhimrao Pawar (18), Sonu Yuvaraj Pawar (19) and Anil Gorakh Pawar (17) -- all relatives and residents of Bhatena I slums -- jumped into the canal, passing through the slum, at about 6 pm on Saturday, when the police reached the slums to raid the gambling dens there.

The four youths, who were engaged with a scuffle with another group over the harassment of a girl in the slum earlier in the day, panicked and jumped into the canal to escape arrest. But the canal, with usually four to five feet of water, was overflowing due to continuous rains and the four got washed away due to the strong current.

The fire brigade, which was summoned immediately, stated that while Harish was saved by slum residents with a stick, the other three drowned. Harish was rushed to the New Civil Hospital for treatment and was released after medication on Sunday afternoon.

Continuing the search for the boys through the night, the fire brigade fished out Ganesh's body at noon on Sunday. The body was found from near Hegdewar Pool beyond the Old Gowalak Octroi Post in Pandesara area, six kms from the where the incident occurred.

While none of the four who jumped into the canal knew how to swim, one of them was physically handicapped too, said Salalabatpura PSI J O Salunke, who is investigating the case.
