Art, dance and music take on the Kargil flavour

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
SURAT, July 18: An exhibition of more than 40 paintings and sculptures, many of them depicting war scenes and the picturesque mountain ranges of Kargil, began here on Sunday evening at the Rotary Art Gallery. The entire amount collected from the exhibition containing works of 26 artists and sculptors from South Gujarat will be donated to the Kargil Shaheed Fund.

Similarly, city-based art academy `Kalashree' has also decided to come up with an audio-visual album, ``Vande Mataram''. While patriotic songs will be played in the background, bharatnatyam dancers will perform on these songs to be picturised at a number of locations in the state.

The exhibition is a gesture of solidarity with the jawans on the border, and although we have thrown the enemy out of our soil, there is a lot to be done still in terms of medication and other requirements, organisers Jagdeep Smart and Rohit Zaveri said. This is a contribution in that direction, they added. The six-day exhibition will remain open from 4 pm to 9 pm through the week.

Some of the paintings that demand mention include a masterpiece by Vasudev Smart which depicts the war scenario in traditional style, ``Tiger Hill'' by Rohit Zaveri, ``Love and Peace'' by Jagdeep Smart and an extraordinary painting by Rakesh Engineer that shows Mahatma Gandhi in war fatigues, with a machine gun in one hand and a flag in another. Tied to his waist are hand grenades and other war equipment.

Those artists and sculptors, whose works are on display and sale, include internationally acclaimed painter Vasudev Smart, Jagdeep Smart, Rohit Zaveri, Thakore Mistry, Ramesh Patel, H P Dhaduk, Kaushik Gajjar, Jitendra Patel, Bipin Bhatt, Subhash Pandya, Bharat Modi, Jagruti Bardoliwala, Mayank Kapadia, Hemant Madrasi, Arun Parekh, Indravadan Patel, Narendra Luhar, Maharshi Luhar, Kirit Patel, Keful Patel, Nehal Parekh, Zenab Lokhandwala, Bhavesh Patel, Dharmesh Patel, Rakesh Engineer and Gopinath.

Meanwhile, city-based art organisation `Kalashree', in association with about 60 other other organisations has decided to produce a video album titled `Vande Mataram'. The album will be handed over to the state government.

A release issued by the organisation stated that Bankimchandra Chattoapadhyay's song will be translated to Hindi and bharatnatyam dancers of Kalashree academy will perform while the song is being played. Other songs that will be included in the album to be produced soon will be `Saare jahan se achchha Hindustan hamara', `Mera Bharat Mahan', `Na chudi ki khan khan, na payal ki chhan chhan, sab kuch kiya hai vatan arpan tujhko' by city poet Raj Sharma, `Hum Honge Kaamiyaab' and other songs.

More than 350 artists from the city and region, led by Kalashree convener Dimple Deputy will form the dance group while the 64 organisations that have contributed towards the album will be featured during the 64 times that Vande Mataram appears in the song.

The songs will be picturised at Mount Abu, Palitana, Saputara, Dandi and other historical monuments in the region. A number of noted personalities in the field, including singers, art directors, composers and others will render their services towards the completion of the proposed album, Kalashree office bearers said.
