Karnataka JD-BJP alliance runs into rough weather

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
HYDERABAD, JULY 18: The proposed tie-up of the Janata Dal (JD) and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is running into rough weather with Bharatiya Janata Party general secretary M Venkaiah Naidu expressing displeasure over the confusion in the Karnataka Janata Dal.

``There is no clarity and utter confusion prevails on the issue of alliance in the Karnataka unit of the JD and things cannot be resolved unless JD leaders speak in one voice,'' the BJP general secretary informed reporters here today.

``As things stand, there is no alliance with the JD in Karnataka,'' Naidu asserted and expressed his unhappiness over Karnataka Chief Minister J H Patel's reported remarks in a television interview where he described the Congress as `corrupt' and the Bharatiya Janata Party as `cancerous'.

Earlier, Patel had announced that the Janata Dal was in principle willing to join the National Democratic Alliance in the forthcoming Lok Sabha and Assembly elections subject to the approval of the party's Political AffairsCommittee.

There was stiff opposition to the suggestion from former prime minister H D Deve Gowda and the State Bharatiya Janata Party unit.

``It was the feedback we got that an alliance of Lok Shakti, JD and BJP would be a winning combination in the September simultaneous polls in Karnataka but the way things are shaping up makes any understanding difficult unless the JD leaders speak in one voice,'' Naidu, who is also in charge of Karnataka affairs, said.
