Ex-PCB chairman flays suspension

Shahid Ahmed Khan
ISLAMABAD, JULY 18: Ousted Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman, Khalid Mehmood has alleged he has been punished because he was defending the national cricket team and that suspension of PCB was ``only meant to help elements who are not sincere with pakistan cricket to achieve their objectives''.

Criticising the suspension of PCB by President Muhammad Rafiq Tarar on Friday night, Mehmood said, ``if there was any need to bring about any change in the cricket set up, there could have been other ways to do so.''

``I did not expect such an extreme decision allowing few people to spoil both Pakistan cricket and the team,'' he said. The axed PCB chairman has strongly defended the Wasim Akram-led side's World Cup performance despite the chorus of betting and match-fixing charges at home.

Expressing shock at the inclusion of Javed Zaman Khan, cousin of former Pakistan stars Imran Khan and Majid Khan, in the two-member ad-hoc committee formed to run the game, he said affairs of cricket had been given to ``thoseelements who are neither sincere with Pakistan cricket nor with the team.''

``People who could not even make it to the office of a divisional cricket association now would run the affairs of national cricket.''

Zaman Khan has said the committee had a three-point agenda, scrutiny of bogus clubs to eliminate elections based on bogus votes before conduct of polls to all PCB-affiliated units, promotion of the game at the grass-root level and enforcement of discipline.

The ad-hoc body chief Mujibur Rehman, who is also the president of the Islamabad Cricket Association, is scheduled to return to Pakistan from Doha, Qatar on Wednesday and take charge of his new responsibility.
