No deaths in Surat's heaviest spell

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
SURAT, July 19: Incessant rainfall through the night and well into the Monday afternoon threw normal life out of gear as Surat city experienced the strongest showers of the current season. A number of short-circuits, wall and tree collapses were reported, but no rain-related deaths were registered in the past 24 hours.

All talukas of the district also received heavy rainfall, causing widespread water logging in most towns and villages of the district. Until Monday evening, almost all talukas of the district had received more than 50 mm of rainfall in 24 hours.

Surat city received 64.8 mm of rainfall from 5:30 pm on Sunday to 8:30 am on Monday and another 85.4 mm of rainfall until 5:30 pm on Monday. More rain has been forecast for the city and South Gujarat in the next 24 hours.

Water gushed into the Krishnanagar, Morarji, Ramdevnagar and Rasoolabad slums after the Kankar Khadi, which runs through the Pandesara area, overflowed early this morning following heavy rainfall. The Fire Brigade pressed boats into service at Morarji Vasahat, where the water was four-feet deep, to rescue slum-dwellers.

The Surat Municipal Corporation shifted thousands of people to safer places and schools runs by the Nagar Prathamik Shikshan Samiti.

Widespread waterlogging has reported from almost all the low-lying areas of the city, including the Katargam industrial estate, A K Road, Varachha Road and Kapodara.
