ULFA stops fresh recruitment -- Army

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
GUWAHATI, JULY 20: Recruitment in the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) has come to a standstill and new cadres were not allowed freedom of movement due to fear of desertions.

Interrogation of a woman cadre Numoli Sutradhar alias Nijora Medhi alias Nandita Das by the Army had revealed that the morale of the ULFA was at an all-time low especially in the women wing, employed in routine and insignificant jobs, a press release issued by the Army's 21 Mountain Division said here today.

The male militants were peeved at the way in which they were being treated by the leadership who are safe and leading a life of comfort in foreign countries, the release said.

``Sustained pressure by the security forces had forced many ultras to see the futility of their cause and desert the ranks", it said.

``Resistance to extortion by the local populace, which in one case even included beating to death of a militant who was extorting money, are sure pointers of things to come wherein people of Assam and securityforces are jointly tackling militancy in their own way", the release added.

Arms recovered

One ULFA militant was shot dead while a huge quantity of arms and ammunition was recovered from central Assam by the Army today. Troops operating in Darrang district shot dead an unidentified ultra in an encounter in village Chaudaripara near Kalaigaon. One .38 revolver with three rounds was recovered from the slain militant.
