VADODARA, July 20: Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) leader Medha Patkar and more than 65 other satyagrahis camping at Domkhedi in Maharashtra on Tuesday reiterated their resolve to face submergence, even as water levels in river Narmada increased, partly submerging fields in three villages of Maharashtra and one in Madhya Pradesh.In a declaration sent to the NBA office here, Patkar has reiterated that they would foil any police attempt at forceful eviction. According to information reaching here on Monday, those at the satyagrha site are resisting police action.
Quoting Patkar, Sanjay Sangvai of the NBA told Express Newline that half of farmer Luvariya Shankari's field in Jalsindhi was submerged. His is the first field to be submerged. Waters have also entered fields in Surug, Bharad and Pipalchowk villages of Maharashtra, and are rising steadily.
At the time of going to press, the satyagrha site in Domkhedi was 10 feet above water level. A police force of 40, including officers of the rank of deputy superintendents, are camping at Domkhedi to monitor the situation.
