Cop injured in accident

Arvind Chhabra
Chandigarh, July 20: Even as a city police constable was seriously injured in an accident, an inquiry has been ordered into what was the policeman doing at the place of accident, which is nearly three kilometres away from his position of deployment.

Police sources said Police Control Room Constable Harnek Singh was injured when the motorcycle he was riding was reportedly hit by a truck at the rotary of Sectors 29, 31, Industrial Area Phase I and II. The accident occurred around 5.30 a.m. The truck driver rushed him to the PGI where his condition is stated to be serious with severe head injuries. The police have registered a case. Gunman Rajbir Singh (also a constable with PCR), who was pillion-riding, escaped unhurt, added police sources.

Meanwhile, taking a serious view, UT Inspector General of Police S.K. Singh has ordered a departmental inquiry to ascertain how the two PCR personnel reached that area when they were deployed near an electricity station in Industrial Area, nearly three kilometres away. SP (City) Baldev Singh has been asked to conduct the inquiry.

Police sources added that Rajbir Singh, when questioned, replied that they had gone to take tea, which the police found "unjustifiable". The PCR personnel, who are equipped with hand-wireless sets, are required to inform the control room if they are moving from their point of deployment.

Sources said the presence of the PCR vehicle in this area lent credibility to the reports that they were indulging in extorting money from the vehicles entering the city from the Ambala-Chandigarh road. A couple of months ago, two constables were dismissed after they had allegedly taken bribe from a truck driver on this road.
