Car Bazaar to come under MC tariff net

C.B. SINGH
CHANDIGARH, JULY 20: In a bid to generate revenue for the fund-starved Municipal Corporation, the Apni Mandi Committee of the Corporation, at its meeting held here yesterday, recommended certain amount of tariff to be charged from the auto-dealers to organise car and scooter bazaars on Sundays in different parts of the city.

As per the recommendation, each auto dealer will have to pay Rs 3,000 per month for the Sunday Car Bazaars, while for the Sunday Scooter Bazar each dealer will be charged Rs 1,500 per month. The meeting was held under the chairmanship of Gurcharan Das Kala and attended by Senior Deputy Mayor Kanhyaya Lal Sharma and two nominated councillors -- Parsana Kaur and R.S. Kailey. However, the two members of the Committee did not participate in the meeting, sources said.

These recommendations will be tabled before the forthcoming meeting of Finance and Contracts Committee of the Corporation. Once it is recommended by the F&C Committee, it will be placed before the 29-member House of the MC for its implementation, says a senior MC official. Apart from councillors, the meeting was attended by the representatives of Punjab Mandi Board, Medical Officer Health and Assistant Commissioner, it was stated.

Among other issues, speedy cleanliness and garbage disposal from sites of Apni Mandis were discussed. After lengthy discussion, the committee also recommended adequate lighting arrangement besides levelling sites and provision of mobile toilets, which the people have been demanding for a long time.

The controversial issue relating to regularising rehri and phari markets parallel to Apni Mandis could not come up for discussion by the ruling party members. The concept of Apni Mandi was mooted when the present Chief Election Commissioner M.S. Gill was the Punjab Development Commissioner.

Meanwhile, the Punjab Mandi Board has decided to make available umbrella and plastic crates to the farmers at subsidised rates for which the sanctioned amount has already been released, it was officially informed.
