Showers pound city for second day

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
VADODARA, July 20: For the second consecutive day, alternate heavy and light showers disrupted life in the city and affected telephone services in some areas. Several low-lying roads and thoroughfares, including Raopura, Karelibaug, Warasia, Mandvi and Panigate, were reported to be partially waterlogged.

Rajendra Jhala, a 26-year-old labourer of Wakaner village, Savli taluka, was rushed to SSG Hospital after he touched a live electric wire late on Monday night. No police confirmation of the case was available.

The telecom department received several complaints related to affected telephones lines, though the snag was said to be at the cable level. DoT general manager Rakesh Babu said the complaints were few and about minor problems.

Though water level in none of the major dams, rivers and reservoirs in and around the district were reported to be rising, the control room said the Narmada at Golden bridge at Bharuch was flowing at 16 metre, way below the danger mark at 31 metre.

Even as more rain was forecast till Wednesday afternoon, Vadodara city and taluka recorded 18 mm of rain in the 24 hours ending at 6 pm on Tuesday.
