Rain no dampener on players

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
S.A.S. NAGAR, July 20: Rain was hardly a dampener for the 25-odd Punjab Ranji Trophy probables who underwent training in their off-season coaching-cum-practice camp at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium here today.

Even though skipper Vikram Rathore and off-spinner Harbhajan Singh are yet report, and wicket keeper-batsman Pankaj Dharmani is down with fever, the campers meant business. As the practice wickets were wet due to rain, the campers worked on their physical fitness under the supervision of coach Manjit Singh.

The camp will continue till the first week of August.

Manjit was hopeful of the weather clearing up in a couple of days. "That would give the team a chance to work in the nets. After our semifinal finish last year, we hope to improve this time," Manjit said.

It may be recalled that PCA had organised the Inter-District Katoch Shield, which is normally played in October-November, in May-June this time. This would keep the players match-fit, felt Manjit. "By the time the season approaches, our players should be both mentally and physically fit for that," he said.

Among the probables are six Chandigarh and an equal number of Mohali lads. More probables are expected to arrive in a day or two. The PCA selectors will name the state squad after the camp.

PCA had organised a similar camp last year as well, in which former Test fast bowler and Mumbai coach Balwinder Singh Sandhu was invited to give tips to the Punjab players.
